| The graph below illustrates the removal rate of each grit size, over a 3 minute period of time. As you can see the majority of material removed is within the first minute, then very little removal in minutes 2 and 3. For remarkable results, Buehler recommends using CarbiMet 2 for 1—2 minutes, especially on finer grit sizes |

| Tips, Tricks and Techniques |

If your sample has a clean metallographic cut, free from burrs, burns and excessive deformation, then the number of steps in your grinding process will decrease |
| |
If you are grinding a soft material and you experience embeding, lay a thin layer of candle wax over the SiC paper |
| |
Buehler recommends using CarbiMet® 2 papers for no more then 1-2 minutes. You might think that you are getting a good surface finish, but the paper is not removing any material after 2 minutes of grinding. See removal rate comparison graph above |

If you are having problems removing PSA papers from the platen, simply put a large 'X' of Release Agent onto the platen before placing the CarbiMet 2 paper onto the platen |

In general - hard materials can utilize fewer grinding steps than softer materials. Hard materials can tolerate large jumps in grit size
|
| |
Some materials, such as very pure lead and lead alloys, still benefit from traditional methods with 4 grinding steps |
