The primary purpose of mounting metallographic specimens is for convenience in handling specimens of difficult shapes or sizes during the subsequent steps of metallographic preparation and examination. A secondary purpose is to protect and preserve extreme edges or surface defects during metallographic preparation. The method of mounting should in no way be injurious to the microstructure of the specimen. Pressure and heat are the most likely sources of injurious effects
Castable mounting materials are recommended for mounting specimens that are sensitive to heat and/or pressure. Epoxy resins are commonly used because epoxy will physically adhere to specimens, have low shrinkage, and can be drawn into cracks and pores, especially if a vacuum impregnation chamber is employed and a low viscosity epoxy is used. Epoxies are very suitable for mounting fragile or friable specimens and corrosion or oxidation specimens

EpoHeat, is a cycloalaphatic resin system with added benefits

  Fast 90 minute cure time
  55 °C (131°F) cure temperature
  146 °C (295 °F) peak exotherm
  High 85 Shore D Hardness
  High 69° C (156°F) Heat deflection temperature

Low shrinkage
Low viscosity – 32cps @ 80 °C (176 °F), remaining so for about an hour allowing the product to wet the substrate and fill voids
  Excellent Edge Retention and Clarity
Can mix large amounts in one batch and pour over an extended period of time, up to 4 hours (if left at room temperature) before it gels

EpoHeat requires 90 minutes to cure in an oven @ 55°C (131°F.) This epoxy system is beneficial if preparing a sample that requires good edge retention and minimal shrinkage. EpoHeat can stand up to 4 hours before curing.   EpoHeat requires 90 minutes to cure in an oven @ 55°C (131°F.) Hardness measures the resistances of a material withstanding indentation. The Shore D hardness scale provides a measure of the resistance to indentation of polymer materials   Hardness measures the resistances of a material withstanding indentation. HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) is a measure of distortion resistance under load and elevated temperature. HDT data shows EpoHeat will remain harder than our other epoxy systems during grinding/polishing.   HDT (Heat Deflection Temperature) is a measure of distortion resistance under load and elevated temperature. Viscosity measures the internal resistance of friction when fluids move against themselves. Having a low viscosity allows the resin to flow into every nook to ensure that there are no gaps between the mounting media and the specimen. A high viscosity may allow air bubbles and gaps to be more persistent.   Viscosity measures the internal resistance of friction when fluids move against themselves. (Values based on largest gap present in sample)

(Values based on largest gap present in sample)
EpoHeat presents a 4.5 micron shrinkage gap, in an "¼1 mounting cup. Low shrinkage allows the mounting media to protect the edge of the sample. If gaps are present, trapped abrasives may scratch your sample. If the edge of the sample is not backed up by your chosen mounting media, edge rounding may occur

Guide to choosing the appropriate support clip for your specimen

Buehler SamplKlips®, Specimen Support Clips and UniClips® are intended for use in supporting specimens during mounting for metallographic preparation. The choice of clip will depend on the mounting method and specimen geometry. All of these products are compatible with all Buehler castable media types (epoxy and acrylic). Specimen support clips are not recommended for compression mounting. The SamplKlip® and SamplKlip® I are compatible with compression mounting, however the stainless steel SamplKlip® may deform during the mounting process. The UniClip® is perhaps best suited to compression-mounting, though for this application the UniClip® must be oriented with the “legs” upward to prevent collapse during mounting  The weight of the clips should be considered where light specimens may have the tendency to float in castable media. If this is a concern, the stainless steel SamplKlip® is the best choice. For metallic specimens that are to be etched after preparation, one of the polymer clips (SamplKlip® I, Specimen Support Clip, or UniClip®) is best to prevent interference with etching due to a stainless steel clip in contact with the  specimen Specimen thickness will influence choice of clip type as follows

Clip Type Approximate Compatible Specimen Thickness
Spec Support Clip, UniClip 0.0035” to 0.090” (0.9 mm to 2.3 mm)
SamplKlip®, SamplKlip® I (large and small) up to 0.200” (5 mm)

FAQ
Can you use with disposable plastic castable mounting cups
No, they will melt
Can you use with MetKleer® or Phenolic/Plastic Ring forms
With care and the use of a vacuum grease to form a tight seal to the form and the base or glass slide. Remember this product has extremely low viscosity and may leak out.  The Metkleer Adhesive Base or   MetGrip liners are not suitable for use in an oven
Can you use with Conductive Filler
Due to the low viscosity, the filler will sink to the bottom so the entire mount will NOT be conductive. It is    best to sputter coat this sample if it needs to be conductive
Why is my epoxy crystallized, gelled or rock hard in the container
Due to the chemical purity of this product, it may crystallize. To relieve this condition, the entire container should be placed in an oven up to 50 °C (122 °F) for approximately two hours. If product is still  crystallized after two hours, extend the time in the oven until the crystallization is relieved
